Aba—Police in Abia State have arrested 14 pregnant teenagers at a maternity home allegedly used as baby factory at Umunkpeyi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.

The pregnant girls, aged between 14 and 25, were arrested at Nma Charity/ Maternity Rehabilitation Centre, while its proprietress, Nma David, escaped before police stormed the area.

A police source told ClassicMedia that some of the teenagers claimed to have come from Imo, Anambra, Enugu and Rivers states, while others said they were brought to the maternity home by sympathisers.

Some of them said they were driven away from their homes because of the unwanted pregnancies. “Twelve of the 14 suspects are confirmed to be at various stages of pregnancy, while two said they were there to check if they were already pregnant,” the source added.

Spokesman of Abia State Police Command, Ezekiel Onyeke, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the incident, urged the public to assist the police with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the proprietress of the home.
