A 26-year old man commits suicide

Bauchi—A 26-year-old civil servant from Dass Local Government Area of Bauchi State has committed suicide.

The deceased, identified as Daniel Haruna, allegedly drank a poisonous chemical substance, known as Gamali 20, popularly used to kill rodents, last Sunday.

It was learned that Daniel was battling with alcohol and found it impossible to drop the habit, a development that put him in constant need of money. According to a family member, who pleaded anonymity, Daniel who lived with his younger, brother, Musa, came home late last Saturday and asked his younger brother for food.

Musa was said to have asked the deceased what happened to the money he gave him to prepare the meal for that day, which he did not prepare. Vanguard gathered that Musa was woken from sleep by sounds of groaning and that when he saw his brother writhing in pains and vomiting, he thought he was drunk as usual and went to look for milk to stop the vomiting.

It was also learned that it was so late that Musa could not get milk to buy and, therefore, went to sleep and woke up the next morning to see his brother still in pain. Daniel was said to have told his younger brother to call some family members that he actually took poison to kill himself. When the relatives gathered, he asked them to forgive him for whatever wrong he might have done them.

He was taken to General Hospital, Dass, on Sun-day morning where he died. Doctors, according to a family source, said the deceased died of poisoning. He said that the deceased had been buried at Dass. The family source said that shortly after Daniel’s death, many of his neighbours and friends started recalling some of the things he was saying.

The source said: “For instance, he was telling people that brought for food for Sallah to come and collect their plates because very soon they will not see him again and he will not be responsible for anything that happened to their plates.” When contacted, spokesman of Bauchi State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Haruna Mohammed, said he was not aware of the incident, but promised to find out.
